Who's at Risk?

Patients who have compromised kidney function are at the highest risk of having a CIN event from heart procedures such as angioplasty or stenting. Typically, these are patients who, in addition to their heart problems, also suffer from either:

  • Chronic kidney disease; or
  • Diabetes

It is generally believed that a compromised kidney is less able to tolerate the toxic dyes and is slower in flushing toxic dye through the kidneys. As a result, the dye spends more time in the kidneys and has a greater chance of causing further kidney damage.
